Obinna Paul Okenwa
Obinna Paul Okenwa is a seasoned legal and tax professional with over twenty (20) years of extensive cognate experience in legal and tax academia, public service, corporate administration, and commercial legal practice. His legal expertise cuts across taxation; labour, employment, and immigration services; energy and natural resources; power, projects, and infrastructure; shipping, aviation, and international trade; construction, real estate, and transportation services; government and regulatory services; litigation, commercial disputes resolution, and risk management services; banking and finance; insurance services; corporate services; and governance, risk, and compliance services.
Obinna routinely advises a broad range of local and international clients on transactional, regulatory, corporate, and tax-related issues. His previous experience includes consulting on revenue and tax-related matters for the Enugu South Local Government Area Council, the Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue Service, and several States’ Board of Internal Revenue Service in Nigeria. He also had an engaging stint serving as Counsel and Partner at various Nigerian law firms.
Obinna is an Executive Director at several Nigerian companies, including: (a) Dig & Get Limited, a company engaged in mining activities relating to minerals such as coal, lead, and zinc; (b) Pickerplus Nigeria Limited, a company engaged in manufacturing activities involving the production of toothpicks and general plastic materials; (c) AWK Properties Limited, a company engaged in construction and real estate services involving the buying and selling of residential and commercial properties; and (d) ECOBI (WA) Limited, a company engaged in road construction and transportation services. He is a Lecturer in Taxation, Insurance, Banking, and Contracts Law at the Faculty of Law of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology in Nigeria.
Prior to joining Phoenix Attorneys as a Partner, Obinna served as an elected Honourable Member of the Enugu State House of Assembly in Nigeria for a term of four years – representing the good people of the Enugu South Urban Legislative Constituency. During this term, he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Environment & Mineral Resources; Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture; Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judicial Matters; and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Lands & Urban Planning. He further served as Chairman of the Ad Hoc House Committee on Investigations relating to a legislative probe of the Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue Service’s activities. Obinna has also served variously as a Legal Consultant, and as a Senior Special Assistant on Legal Matters and Special Duties, to the Chairman of the Enugu South Local Government Area. He further served variously as a Senior Special Assistant on Legal Matters to the Enugu State Deputy Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and as a member of the Enugu State Peace and Reconciliation Committee.
Obinna is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree candidate in Taxation Law & Policy at the Ebonyi State University in Nigeria. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Marine & International Trade Law from the University of Wales in the United Kingdom. He further holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the Enugu State University of Science & Technology in Nigeria. Obinna holds membership of several professional associations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
