Prof. Chukwu Amari Omaka, SAN
Prof. Chukwu Amari Omaka, SAN is a seasoned legal professional with over thirty (30) years of extensive cognate experience in legal academia, public administration, corporate governance, policy consulting, and commercial legal practice. His legal expertise cuts across energy and natural resources; power, projects, and infrastructure; government and regulatory services; corporate services; and commercial disputes resolution. He is the first Professor of Law in Ebonyi State, Nigeria (with a special bias for Marine & Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, and Clinical Legal Education). He is also the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Ebonyi State. Currently, he is the Commissioner for Tertiary Education in Ebonyi State and the pioneer Chairman of the Forum of Commissioners of Education in Nigeria. He has been conferred the state honour of “Officer, Ebonyi Hall of Fame” (OEHF), among other state honours. Chukwu routinely advises a broad range of local and international clients on transactional, regulatory, corporate, and policy-related issues. His previous experience includes consulting for a host of international organizations and tertiary institutions across Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. Prior to joining Phoenix Attorneys as a Partner, Chukwu served as Counsel and Associate Partner at various Nigerian law firms in Lagos, Nigeria. He also consulted for several public and private corporations in Nigeria, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Sea Petroleum & Gas company in Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria. He is a Professor of Law at the Ebonyi State University in Nigeria, where he has served several terms as the Dean of Law.
Chukwu holds two Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Law from the Atlantic International University in the United States of America (USA) and in Environmental Management Law & Policy from the Enugu State University of Science & Technology in Nigeria. He also holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Environmental & Town Planning Law and International Human Rights Law from the University of Lagos in Nigeria.
Chukwu further holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nigeria. He is also member of several local and international organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), the International Bar Association (IBA), the Council of Legal Education (CLE) in Nigeria, the Clinical Legal Education Organization (MCLEO) in the United Kingdom, the International Legal Ethics Association (ILEA) in Canada and the USA, and the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) in the USA. He is a past President of the National Association of Law Teachers (NALT) of Nigeria, which is the umbrella body of all law professors and university law lecturers in Nigeria and was formerly the Regional Head of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) in charge of West Africa. He currently serves as the Nigerian (National) Representative of the CLEA. Chukwu has also served as a Senior Magistrate at the Ebonyi State Judiciary, Chairman of the Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency Tribunal, and member of the Ebonyi State Law Review Commission.
